Johnson & Wales Charlotte Campus Names Palermo its Executive in Residence |
|
Johnson & Wales University today announced it has appointed Jim Palermo, recently retired Bank of America executive vice president, as the new Executive in Residence for its Charlotte campus. |
As executive in residence, Palermo will work with Charlotte Campus President Art Gallagher and the campus leadership team to expand and enhance its relationships with the business community in the greater Charlotte region and Carolinas, as well as with local and state government leaders. In addition, Palermo will advise the campus leadership on strategic planning and other campus development issues.
In his previous role as board chairman of Charlotte Center City Partners, Palermo in 2002 was instrumental in recruiting Johnson & Wales to Charlotte and supporting the university in its plans to consolidate its southeastern U.S. presence at a new, full-scale campus in uptown Charlotte. Since then, Palermo has worked closely with the university as it develops the campus in uptown’s Gateway Village and establishes its presence in the region.
“Jim’s advice, insight and community-centered thinking will be a tremendous asset to us,” said Charlotte Campus President Art Gallagher. “He has played a key role in most of the improvements and development of center city living, retail shopping, playgrounds, parks and strongly supports the arts and education in this city. Jim will help Johnson & Wales’ extend even further its deep commitment to being a vital community partner and educator in this state.”
Palermo will begin his new role immediately and will report to Gallagher. “I have enormous respect for Johnson & Wales’ leadership, their strong values and strategic vision as unique career university,” Palermo said. “This university will have a powerful impact on the greater Charlotte region and I’m delighted to continue supporting Johnson & Wales’ success in every way possible.”
Palermo retired as executive vice president for Bank of America in December 2003, after a 24-year career there. He managed administrative and production functions in various departments, divisions and group assignments and was a member of the Bank of America management operating committee.
He is a notable and active civic leader, having served on the boards of numerous organizations supporting business, community development, arts and medical causes. Palermo has served as chairman of the Charlotte Arts & Science Council, the Brain Tumor fund for the Carolinas, as well as Charlotte Center City Partners. He is a past member of the board of trustees for the North Carolina Medical Foundation, a board member of the Retinitis Pigmentosa Foundations, and the Levine Museum of the New South.
Palermo is a native of Dunkirk, N.Y., and earned a bachelor’s degree from Canisius College in Buffalo, N.Y. He and his wife Sharron live in uptown Charlotte.
The Johnson & Wales Charlotte Campus will offer associate and bachelor's degree programs from its three colleges – Business, Culinary Arts and Hospitality. The $82 million campus expects a first-year enrollment of 885 students in fall 2004. Enrollment is expected to grow to more than 2,800 and employment at the Charlotte Campus is projected to reach 250 staff and faculty by 2007.
Johnson & Wales — America’s Career University® — was founded in 1914. It is a private, non-profit, accredited institution offering undergraduate and graduate degree programs in business, food service, hospitality and technology.
