Historical Heritage
Formerly an 1880’s equestrian estate, the 9.5-acre Estancia La Jolla is nestled in a traditional California coastal rancho setting. Estancia means "estate" in Spanish. “La Jolla” originates from the Spanish word “la joya,” meaning, “jewel.”
The land on which Estancia La Jolla is situated, was originally owned by the affluent Black family, (also the namesake for the adjacent Black’s beach). The beach’s sea-washed caves attract visitors and locals year after year. During the 1960's ownership was transferred to the University of California San Diego (UCSD). The Black family made an adamant request that the land be used for a hotel to benefit the city of La Jolla and the UCSD Community. After careful examination and extensive planning, Destination Hotels & Resorts was selected to design and manage Estancia La Jolla.
The property’s architecture and design were carefully constructed to pay homage to the rich history of the property and the surrounding area. There are three brick buildings incorporated into the hotel that were actually modeled after, and utilize materials from, the original equestrian estate; The business center is modeled after the caretaker's cottage, the hotel lobby was created from the old farmhouse and Mustangs & Burros bar and restaurant was inspired by the tack room. With the help of the Historical Society, the original buildings were deconstructed, but the bricks were preserved, making Estancia La Jolla a crown jewel of historic La Jolla, California.
Luscious Landscape
The grounds of Estancia La Jolla significantly distinguish the property from others in the area. It is a lush garden oasis, beautifully landscaped with more than 600 trees including: Eucalyptus, Pineapple Guava, Citrus (both Lemon & Orange), Chinese Flame Tree, Fig, Olive, Torrey Pine, Italian Stone Pine, among others. There are 165 palms, vines, espaliers, countless shrubs and colorful ground-cover including Lady Palm, Mexican Fan Palm, Rosemary, Sage, Lavender, Pomegranate, Thyme, White Oleander, and Heavenly Bamboo.
More than $2 million was used to create the fertile botanical gardens throughout the property, and Burton Associates was selected to be the landscaping design firm.
Impeccable Design
Estancia La Jolla is a sensory retreat comprised of a series of low-rise adobe structures with arched doorways and clay tile roofs. Wood lintels, exposed rafters, wrought iron, thick plaster walls and other traditional materials complete the rancho-style surroundings.
The hotel’s distinctive collection of furnishings adds to the warm rancho feeling, while bringing it seamlessly into the 21st century. The interior was designed by Babey, Moulton, Jue & Booth of San Francisco, California. The lobby floor is comprised of Terra Cotta, and the decorative smaller tiles are a kind of Mexican Talavera, a white glazed earthenware ceramic, and are custom made by Topanga Tile in California.
The walls of the lobby and around the fireplace in the library are covered with plaster made by a classic Italian technique called Integral Color Plaster. This is an intricate time-consuming process involving blending in various colors to create a smooth subtle appearance.
The exposed beams in the lobby and the fireplace mantle are comprised of Douglas Fir which is eco-friendly and indigenous to California. The library shelves are made of hickory, and the guestroom desks and bedside tables are oak. The warm cherry dressers add a cozy feel to the guestrooms.
Stepping into any building at the property is like stepping into the warmth of a past era, and yet the hotel has all the comforts of modern luxury.
The driveway into the property is a mix of soft and crunchy gravel, traditional to Rancho Estate entrances. The sensory aspects of hearing and feeling the winding gravel road, creates an aura of anticipation before even stepping foot on the property.

Estancia La Jolla is certified by the International Association of Conference Centers (IACC), meaning that the hotel has been specifically engineered to meet all of the association’s stringent requirements, including being designed and furnished with ergonomic chairs, tables with non-glare, hard writing surfaces, appropriate lighting and acoustics, tackable wall surfaces, and wireless high speed Internet connectivity throughout the entire property.
