Haskayne School of Business granted certification for its PhD in Tourism Management program by WTO

  • Haskayne School of Business The Haskayne School of Business is now officially the first business school in the world to be granted certification for its PhD in Tourism Management program by the World Tourism Organization (WTO).

    Although many schools including the Haskayne School of Business have been granted certification at the undergraduate level the PhD program in Calgary is the first and only one of its kind in the world.

    “We believe it provides further evidence that the Haskayne School of Business is the global leader in Education and Research for the world’s largest industry,” says Brent Ritchie, chair of the World Tourism Education and Research Centre (WTERC) and chair of Tourism Management. “The WTO certification reflects very favourably on the quality of the students in our program – as well as the quality of the program itself.”

    “This is great news for the tourism industry and will allow individuals to pursue formal education in tourism, which will ultimately benefit the entire industry,” says Joe Fardell, president and CEO of Tourism Calgary.The city of Calgary welcomes nearly five million visitors each year, spending approximately $1.03 billion. Tourism also generates more than $53 million yearly in municipal tax support revenues and employs around 21,000 Calgarians.

    The (WTO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations, and is the leading international organization in the field of tourism. It serves as a global forum for tourism policy issues and practical source of tourism expertise. The WTO certification was created to establish an international quality standard for tourism education and training systems and to pave the way towards greater academic productivity in tourism.

    The Haskayne School of Business is an innovative business school with an international reputation for influencing the practice of management and leadership through quality teaching and research.
