  • Outrigger Outrigger Hotels & Resorts has announced its first resort in Australia's Northern Territory. Located in Darwin, the capital city of the Northern Territory, the new hotel will be branded as the Outrigger Pandanas Darwin when it opens in late 2006, reflecting the significance of the Pandanas Palm, a native Australian life source.

The 26 level Outrigger Pandanas Darwin will become the second tallest building in Australia’s youngest and fastest growing city, and will be located within walking distance of the city’s entertainment and dining precinct.

This multi-million dollar development will include a dynamic mix of one and two bedroom suites and luxurious penthouses. Outrigger Pandanas Darwin will also feature a restaurant, bar, retail space and an exclusive day spa.

According to Outrigger’s Vice President-Business Development, Bill Henderson, “Outrigger Pandanas Darwin will add another dimension to the Northern Territory’s booming tourism industry, and will mark a unique addition to Outrigger Hotels & Resorts’ growing portfolio in Australia and the South Pacific.”

Henderson also pointed out that a presence in Darwin is a key part of Outrigger’s vision to become a significant presence throughout Australia, where the company currently has 14 hotels and resorts open or under construction in Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, and now the Northern Territory.

Outrigger’s Managing Director for Oceania, Dave Lawrence, described the company’s expansion to Australia’s “top end” as an exciting and long awaited venture. “Darwin is viewed by Outrigger as one of Australia’s vibrant and cosmopolitan cities,” he said. “It’s located right on the edge of the Timor Sea; and being Australia’s gateway to Asia, Darwin has a strong tourism focus for both inbound and domestic markets.”

Developed by Gwelo Developments, Outrigger Pandanas Darwin enlisted international award-winning architects and interior designers in the quest for the ultimate Northern Territory escape. “Outrigger has been working closely with Gwelo Developments and we are pleased to associate the Outrigger name with this quality development,” Mr Lawrence said.

“The resort’s proximity to world heritage listed Kakadu National Park, the Port of Darwin and tourist favourite The Ghan train from Darwin to Adelaide in South Australia, make it an ideal launch pad for travel and discovery in Australia’s top end,” Lawrence added.
