California Hotel & Lodging Association Educational Foundation Awards $20,000 in Scholarships

  • California Hotel and Lodging Association For the tenth year, the California Hotel & Lodging Association Educational Foundation has awarded scholarships to deserving hospitality program students. This year, approximately $20,000 in educational scholarships was awarded to nine hospitality students.

    Applicants applied for one of three types of scholarships offered, the General Scholarship, designed to reward California residents who have demonstrated a desire to make the lodging industry a career, and applied to or are enrolled in an accredited two- or four-year college or university program of lodging management; the Working Professional Scholarship, intended to reward lodging employees who seek to expand their education and knowledge in their current job positions, or expand their education and knowledge in order to be able to obtain a different or better job in the lodging industry; and the Richard Schroeck Hospitality Engineer Scholarship, available to hourly "hospitality engineering" staff and maintenance personnel and their dependents.

    CH&LA is pleased to announce the following individuals have been awarded scholarships for the 2005-2006 academic year:


    Victoria Andujar, University of San Francisco
    Beverly Christian, Univ. of Phoenix
    Christopher Cooper, University of San Francisco
    Tiffany Dale, Cal Poly Pomona
    Julius Delacruz, San Diego State University
    Martin DiGrande, University of San Francisco
    Brynn Seidel, San Jose State University
    Thinh Truong, Cypress Community College
    Aniela Valtierra, University of San Francisco



    "We're pleased to be supporting tomorrow's general managers, investing in the education of today's deserving students to grow our industry," stated Luis Barrios, Chairperson of CH&LA and General Manager of Best Western Hacienda Hotel in San Diego. "Given our industry's labor shortage, which is only predicted to worsen, it's great that the CH&LA Educational Foundation can help support the future through these three scholarships."

    The California Hotel & Lodging Association (CH&LA) is the largest state lodging industry trade association in the country. Its 1,600 members, which comprise close to 175,000 guest rooms, consist of hotels, motels, bed and breakfast inns, guest ranches, resorts, spas, condominium rentals, timeshares, and vacation home rentals located throughout California.
