Joie De Vivre Hospitality - On the Record: An interview with Chip Conley |
|
Chip Conley started Joie de Vivre Hospitality in the 1980s with one funky Tenderloin motor hotel and has built the company into a 28-hotel group in the ensuing 19 years. |
These days, Potrero Hill resident Conley runs 18 hotels just in San Francisco, the most of any hotelier in the city. He has built privately held Joie de Vivre by tweaking the boutique hotel concept pioneered by the late San Francisco entrepreneur Bill Kimpton and New York impresario Ian Schrager and giving his properties offbeat flair.
Conley's Rex Hotel has a library and a literary flavor. His Phoenix Hotel has a retro 1950s motor lodge vibe. His newest offering, the Hotel Vitale, showcases yoga classes in the rooftop penthouse of its Financial District building.
A friend and confidante of Mayor Gavin Newsom, Conley is mentioned as a possible future politico himself and has fashioned a reputation as perhaps the city's most unique hotel operator. The following interview has been edited for space and clarity.
