The Plaza, an iconic presence at Fifth Avenue and Central Park since 1907, is being restored to create the elegant homes it once featured for leading citizens of the day, and to serve visitors from around the world for the next hundred years. The castle-like landmark was closed last year for a $350 million lobby-to-roof renovation.
The Plaza will offer 182 extraordinary private residences, a world class hotel with 282 rooms and suites, magnificently preserved and restored public spaces, and a collection of world-class boutiques and destination restaurants.
The legendary structure is being returned to its former glory with meticulous attention to detail. For example, the firm that produced the Plaza's original ceramic roof tiles is creating exact replicas to repair and restore the roofline, and a breathtaking 1,200-square-foot leaded stained-glass "laylight" is being built to replicate the original 1907 ceiling of the Palm Court.
"There will be extraordinary apartments overlooking Central Park and Fifth Avenue with layouts flowing from the contours of the historic building itself. The great public spaces, such as the Palm Court, Oak Bar, Oak Room and Grand Ballroom, accurately and thoughtfully restored, will continue to contribute to the life, vitality and grandeur of New York. We are giving new life to a storied concept, the Plaza as the grand palace of an urban democracy," Mr. Naftali said.
Rooted in European cosmopolitan style, the 182 Private Residences combine classic elegance, world-class amenities and state-of-the-art technology. Generous foyers, galleries, great rooms with sweeping views, formal dining rooms and ceiling heights ranging from 9 1/2 to 14 feet give the homes imposing scale and legendary stateliness. The one-, two- and three- bedroom residences, and four-bedroom duplex and five-bedroom triplex penthouses, range from approximately $2 million to $33 million. To complement their lifestyle, purchasers of the Private Residences will also be able to select from a full range of the hotel's amenities and services.
The 282-room-and-suite hotel will offer the consummate New York experience. One hundred fifty-two of the suites will be available for purchase as hotel condominiums, providing their owners with a pied-a-terre, while functioning at other times as part of the hotel.
The Plaza will open in 2007, in time to celebrate its 100th anniversary.
