Crafting a home away from home

  • USATODAY Extended business trips might never be easy, but at least living on the road doesn't have to be as harsh as it once was.

    Competition for a growing number of business travelers who measure their stays in weeks or months is making the U.S. lodging industry better at catering to their needs.

    As business travel rebounds from the slump that followed Sept. 11, guests in extended-stay hotels and corporate apartments are likely to find upgrades in bedding, technology, furniture, kitchenware - even art.

    The number of business travelers taking extended business trips is soaring as the economy expands, companies merge and spin off, and the government spends billions on homeland security, says Peggy Berg, president of the Highland Group. Her Atlanta consulting firm, which tracks the extended-stay lodging business, calculates 9% growth last year in the number of extended-stay rooms that were rented.

    Value is a main selling point for corporate apartments, limiting the amenities available to business travelers. But Gavan James, Oakwood's general manager, says competition is pushing his business to improve the accommodations.
