December 20, 2000 -- HVS International -- Radisson Hotels and Resorts has announced the opening of its first regional office in Japan. The office, based at the Radisson Miyako Hotel Tokyo will serve a dual purpose. First, it will be used to coordinate the group's sales and marketing initiatives in East Asia and second, to act as a base to execute the groups continued development programme in the region.

According to Brian Stage, the group's Executive Vice-President, as the Asian market continues to rebound, the power of branding and global marketing will play an increasing role in the Asian hospitality industry. The Asia Pacific region is considered to have tremendous potential growth, a fact seemingly shared by a number of hoteliers, including Bass who last week pledged to invest US$70 million in the development or refurbishment of 14 hotels in the region.

Radisson Hotels and Resorts, which forms part of US Carlson Hotels Worldwide group, now has 31 properties located in the Asia Pacific region. In China, Radisson has recently celebrated the opening of the 519-bedroom Radisson Plaza State Guest Hotel in Beijing and the 286-bedroom Radisson Plaza Hotel in Hangzhou. Meanwhile in India three hotels opened in New Delhi, Chennai and Raichak and a further five hotels are under construction in Jalandar, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Gurgaon and Varanasi. All are expected to be operating by mid-2002. Furthermore, Radisson has a controlling stake in the Sydney-based DC International which operates 18 Radisson hotels in Australia and the Asean region, including the new flagship hotel, the 337-bedroom Radisson Plaza Hotel Sydney.
