  • AH&LA The Educational Institute of the American Hotel & Lodging Association will launch online testing for its professional certification programs in the first quarter of 2007, thanks to the sponsorship of the Hospitality Financial and Technology Professionals (HFTP).

The sponsorship money will enable EI to purchase testing software and upgrade its servers to host online testing for its professional certification programs, which include the Certified Hotel Administrator (CHA), Certified Hospitality Supervisor (CHS), and Master Hotel Supplier (MHS), as well as certification programs for department heads, managers, and specialized positions such as security and trainers. The first certification exams to go online will be HFTP's Certified Hospitality Accountant Executive (CHAE) and Certified Hospitality Technology Professional (CHTP) exams.

'This is a win-win for HFTP and EI,' said Scott Pierce, EI's president and COO. 'We're appreciative of HFTP's generosity and excited that their sponsorship has accelerated the opportunity for us to bring our certification program testing online.'

Bringing testing online will enable EI to further increase its international presence and make it more convenient for busy hospitality professionals to pursue certification without having to attend an on-site testing session.

'Due to the proliferation of technology and globalization in our industry, there has been a real push for hospitality certifications offered online,' said Frank Wolfe, CAE, HFTP executive vice president and CEO. 'Since HFTP is the industry's resource for finance and technology information, it was only logical that we would use our resources to help produce online testing.'

HFTP vice president Agnes DeFranco, Ed.D., CHAE, and professor at the University of Houston, added, 'Partnering with the Educational Institute to provide HFTP's CHAE and CHTP exams online aligns exactly with the association's goals. In addition to increasing our professional status within the hospitality industry, online exams and review courses provide professionals all over the world the opportunity to earn one or both of HFTP's designations without traveling anywhere.'

The HFTP Certification Task Force spent the last year reworking and updating the Certified Hospitality Accountant Executive (CHAE) and the Certified Hospitality Technology Professional (CHTP) designations. The changes include the creation of a Code of Ethics, formation of the Certification Advisory Council (CAC) and a reworking of the appeals procedure. HFTP will also be integrating new material into the designation programs to coincide with the debut of the online tests, including material from the recently-released tenth revised edition of the Uniform System of Accounts for the Lodging Industry for the CHAE test and new questions into the CHTP test question databank.
