European Union Satisfied with EASA Safety Approval of Airbus A380

"The certification of this aircraft by EASA clears the way for its entry into service with the World's airlines," said Barrot. "This is a milestone for our European Aviation Safety Agency. The A380 is receiving a single certification based on a single set of requirements from a single European authority. In years gone by, Airbus would have faced a wide range of obligations, complex procedures and dealings with many different national bodies."

Vice-President Barrot also stressed that "EASA is central to our commitment to ensure the highest safety standards for aircraft, building on the decades of expertise built up by our Member States. But, as a single authority for Europe, it is also delivering a simplification of procedures and red-tape."

"I am very pleased by the cooperation with the US authorities on this aircraft. Cooperation between the EU and the United States is essential and I am committed to developing transatlantic relations in this and across all aspects of aviation," concluded Vice-President Barrot.

The A380 is the first large European aircraft to be certified by EASA. The EASA 'type-certificate' confirms that the design of the aircraft complies with European safety and environmental standards. The A380 can now be legally registered and operated commercially throughout the European Union. In addition, the type-certificate is valid in Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. At the same time, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued its 'validation' of the A380 certification for the US market.
