NEW YORK, NY, November 12, 2001... Seven Grand Prize Winners were announced, and a “Best of Show” Award was presented for the first time, at the 21st annual Gold Key Awards for Excellence in Hospitality Design this morning at The Waldorf=Astoria in New York City.
Presented by the International Hotel/Motel & Restaurant Show® (IH/M&RS) and sponsored by Hospitality Design and Hotel & Motel Management, the Gold Key Awards recognize hospitality designers for excellence in hospitality design in seven design categories: Restaurants — Seating To 110; Restaurants — Seating Over 110; Guest Rooms; Suites; Lobby/Reception Area; Spa/Resort; and Senior Living Facility.
The winner of the inaugural “Best of Show” Award was II By IV Design Associates, Inc. (Toronto, Canada) for their submission in the Restaurant – Seating to 110 category, Rain, in Toronto, Canada. The “Best of Show” Award was chosen from among the seven Grand Prize Winners as having the most ingenious design of all submitted properties.

Judges for the 2001 Gold Key Awards were Marcel Bequillard of Marcel Bequillard, Inc., Clodagh of Clodagh Design International, and Ilan Waisbrod of Studio Gaia.
As an additional feature of the Awards Ceremony, Chip Conley, one of the country’s most unique hoteliers and founder and CEO of Joie de Vivre Hospitality, delivered the keynote address, “The Proliferation of ‘Boutique’.” Joie de Vivre is Northern California’s largest independent hotelier, creating properties with a themed approach, each celebrating a certain aspect of the San Francisco Bay Area.
A $5,000 donation will be made to the Network of Executive Women in Hospitality (NEWH) from the ticket proceeds of the Awards Breakfast. NEWH has pledges, in 2001, to use these funds to establish a scholarship for the children of hotel and restaurant employees who lost their lives on September 11th. These special scholarship funds will be distributed through the NEWH’s New York chapter. The NEWH brings together professionals from all facets of the hospitality industry by providing opportunities for education, professional development and networking. A non-profit organization founded in Los Angeles in 1984, NEWH has chapters nationwide, as well as a growing international membership.
