  • WORLDHOTELS A number of the Scandinavian design hotels within WORLDHOTELS' 500-strong global collection have recently announced exciting developments:

The Hotel Riverton, Gothenburg, a member of the WORLDHOTELS First Class Collection, has just opened up the doors to 36 newly renovated rooms. The style is Scandinavian contemporary with other European influences - for instance the luxurious bathrooms feature Italian glass washbasins. There are further plans afoot for the Riverton, however: the hotel will proceed with a total makeover during the coming years. Four new floors will be added on top of the building, adding 40 new rooms (the Riverton currently has 189 rooms). The top floor will house a new restaurant and a 600m2 wellness and spa area.

The Riverton is offering guests the chance to be James Bond for a night with the 'Casino-package' including free entry to the nearby Casino Cosmopol, plus a handful of chips to get you started. The weekend-package, also including one complimentary drink at the bar, access to the relaxation lounge and breakfast buffet, is priced at 645 SEK (c. £50) per person per night in a superior room.

Yet another unique room has been inaugurated at Hotel Birger Jarl, Stockholm, also belonging to the WORLDHOTELS First Class Collection. The double room called 'Chez Pascale', which has been decorated entirely in white, was named after the design gallery exhibitor, Pascale Cottard-Olsson. Pascale has carefully selected furniture and furnishing items designed by Swedish designers including Anna von Schewen, Monica Förster and Anna Lerinder. The Birger Jarl has also renovated 23 business rooms. Jordens Arkitekter has decorated the rooms with a colour scale inspired by the city of Stockholm.

The 235-room hotel is currently offering a two-night 'Design Package', priced from 2,800 SEK (c.£210) based on two people sharing in a designer room. Guests receive a bag filled with design items, plus two piccolos of sparkling wine upon arrival. The package includes breakfast as well as a free dessert when ordering a main course at the hotel's Birger Restaurant.

The Grand Hotel Rica, Oslo a WORLDHOTELS' Deluxe Collection member, has designed a whole floor exclusively with women in mind. The hotel's 'Ladies Floor' dedicates each room to a successful Norwegian woman. Room 580, for example, is the 'Golf Room' inspired by Suzann Pettersen, the Norwegian golfer. Its décor features wicker, cream and sporty stripes. Another, the 'Arctic Room', is ornamented with furs and reindeer antlers in honour of Mari Boine, a Sami (Laplander) musician. The room inspired by Åsne Seierstad, the journalist and bestselling author of The Bookseller of Kabul, glimmers with eastern touches.

Room features include luxurious bathroom amenities by L'Occitane, a yoga mat, flowers, selected fruits, magazines and books, and a special Ladies Floor room-service menu, as well as free wireless high-speed internet access, flat-screen cable TV, and an entertainment centre. The Grand Hotel first opened its doors in 1874. The Louis XVI revival style building has 290 rooms, including 52 suites, and is situated right on Karl Johans gate, Oslo's main street. Rooms on the Ladies Floor are priced from 1,880 NOK (c. £156) per night, including all taxes and buffet breakfast in the Grand Cafe.

WORLDHOTELS boasts a number of other excellent Scandinavian design hotels as part of its collection. For example, Copenhagen's Hotel Fox, a member of WORLDHOTELS Comfort Collection, is truly unique with each one of the 61 rooms a work of art in its own right, from strict graphic design to Japanese Manga - the result of inviting 21 international artists and designers in to give the hotel a makeover in conjunction with the launch of the Volkswagen Fox. The hotel features its own business centre, roof terrace, and a seriously innovative restaurant and bar, where original cocktails are invented to accompany each course.

Since each room at the Hotel Fox is so individual, a special 'Tour de Fox' package offers guests the chance to experience three nights in three different rooms. The package starts at DKK 1,230 (c.£115) per night including breakfast and free high-speed Internet access.
