The Senate is back in session, and the debate on the immigration reform bill has resumed.
The danger now is that the bipartisan but tenuous compromise reached before the Memorial Day recess will eventually break down under the mounting pressures, effectively leaving us with the status quo.
As Ronald Reagan used to say, "status quo" is Latin for "the mess we're in," and the one thing that we should all be able to agree on is that, when it comes to immigration, the mess we are presently in is simply not acceptable.
It's bad for our country's morale to allow such a divisive issue to go unresolved. It's bad for our economy, bad for America's workers and, as a representative of America's restaurant industry - our nation's second-largest service employer - I can tell you it is very bad for America's businesses.
The present compromise is based on four pillars: the security of our borders; increased domestic enforcement, including a workable verification system; a new temporary worker program; and a pathway to legal status for the undocumented currently living in the U.S. It is in the nature of political compromises that none of the parties involved will be entirely happy.
