Report: Alcohol problems more prevalent in hospitality industry
Workers in the hospitality industry, compared to other industries, suffer the most from alcohol problems, according to new research from the George Washington University Medical Center.
According to the study, 15 percent of hospitality industry employees have alcohol problems. The construction and mining follows with 14.7 percent of its workers having problems with alcohol. Nearly 12 percent of workers in the wholesale trade sector suffer from problems with alcohol.
Employers in all industries pay for employee alcoholism. An average of 9 percent of U.S. employees drink enough to drive up absentee rates and health care costs, and hurt productivity.
"Most employees represented in these numbers are not dependent on alcohol," said Eric Goplerud, lead researcher of the study. "But they do use alcohol in ways that lead to short-term safety problems and long-term health consequences."
