California Restaurant Association Committed to Statewide Standard for Nutritional Information Disclosure |
|
Sues to Overturn San Francisco Ordinance |
The California Restaurant Association has filed suit against the City and County of San Francisco and the San Francisco Department of Public Health to overturn its 'menu labeling' ordinance. Filed in federal court on July 3rd in the Northern District of California, the suit claims that the San Francisco ordinance is preempted by current law.
'This lawsuit is part of the California Restaurant Association's commitment to establishing a statewide standard for nutritional information disclosure that allows restaurants some flexibility in determining the best way to provide their customers with nutritional information,' said Jot Condie, President of the California Restaurant Association, 'A patchwork of local ordinances would be challenging and confusing for restaurants and their customers.'
The California Restaurant Association is currently working with the Governor and the state legislature to establish a flexible, statewide standard for making nutritional information available in restaurants. Recognizing that some customers wish to review nutritional information before making their selection, the California Restaurant Association is sponsoring AB 2572 (Parra), which is currently awaiting hearing in the Appropriations Committee of the California State Senate.
