Charleston Hotel Welcomes Member of Kennedy Family, Supports Center for Women |
|
One of the most popular hotels in Charleston, South Carolina, The Mills House Hotel recently welcomed prominent member of the Kennedy family Kathleen Kennedy-Townsend who was in town to speak at the Charleston-based Center for Women. |
Experienced in serving celebrities, politicians and even foreign dignitaries, the historic Charleston hotel eagerly anticipated the visit and greeted Mrs. Townsend upon her arrival with a jubilant staff line-up.
With her speech, Mrs. Townsend launched a series of lectures to be put on throughout the year by the Center for Women entitled "Women of Influence." Among other topics, Mrs. Townsend discussed at length the conflicts and ideas presented in her recent book "Failing America's Faithful: How Today's Churches Are Mixing God with Politics and Losing Their Way." Mrs. Townsend's many years of experience, both inside and outside of formal government, along with her membership in one of the nation's most prominent political families gave her lecture a profound gravity that was met by a lengthy standing ovation.
Now an author, activist and board member of several advocacy foundations, Mrs. Townsend is a former two-term Lieutenant Governor of Maryland. Since her unsuccessful race for the Governorship in 2002, she has dedicated herself primarily to speaking and philanthropy. She is the eldest daughter of former Senator and presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy.
The Center for Women is a nonprofit organization committed to the excellence and professional success of women in the Lowcountry, an unofficial region describing South Carolina's coastal counties south of and including Charleston. For a very low annual membership fee, the Center provides counseling, volunteer opportunities, support groups, lectures like the "Women of Influence Series", legal advice and business seminars. Since opening in 1990, the Center for Women has reached over 70,000 members and in 2006 was honored by Oprah Winfrey's "Oprah's Angel Network" with a $25,000 grant.
