STR reports Canada hotel performance for week ending 20 June 2009
The industry's occupancy fell 10.7 percent to 66.8 percent. ADR dropped 9.0 percent to CAD$129.73. RevPAR for the week decreased 18.7 percent to finish at CAD$86.64.
In year-over-year measurements, the industry's occupancy fell 10.7 percent to end the week at 66.8 percent. Average daily rate dropped 9.0 percent to finish the week at CAD$129.73. Revenue per available room for the week decreased 18.7 percent to finish at CAD$86.64.
The provinces reported mixed year-over-year results in all three key metrics. Highlights from the week include:
• Newfoundland reported the only occupancy increase, rising 7.7 percent to 88.1 percent.
• Prince Edward Island experienced the largest decrease in occupancy, reporting a 27.3-percent decrease to 50.7 percent. Alberta (-18.7 percent to 61.9 percent) and British Columbia (-15.1 percent to 67.4 percent) also reported occupancy decreases of 15 percent or more.
• Saskatchewan (+7.9 percent to CAD$123.13) and Prince Edward Island (+4.0 percent to CAD$117.14) were the only two provinces to report ADR increases.
• Alberta reported the largest ADR decrease, down 14.4 percent to CAD$138.88, followed by British Columbia with a 13.0-percent decrease to CAD$139.18 for the week.
• Newfoundland was up 7.5 percent to CAD$124.10 in RevPAR for the week-the largest increase in that metric.
• Three markets reported RevPAR decreases of more than 20 percent: Alberta (-30.4 percent to CAD$85.92); British Columbia (-26.1 percent to CAD$93.86); and Prince Edward Island (-24.4 percent to CAD$59.41).
