STR reports Canada hotel performance for week ending 11 July 2009

  • Smith Travel Research The Canadian hotel industry posted decreases in all three key performance measurements during the week of 5-11 July, according to data from STR.

    In year-over-year measurements, the industry's occupancy fell 7.6 percent to end the week at 66.6 percent. Average daily rate dropped 8.5 percent to finish the week at CAD$128.53. Revenue per available room for the week decreased 15.5 percent to finish at CAD$85.55.

    The provinces reported mixed year-over-year results in all three key metrics. Highlights from the week include:

    • Nova Scotia reported the largest occupancy increase, up 7.5 percent to 78.5 percent, followed by Saskatchewan with a 2.4-percent increase in occupancy to 76.4 percent.

    • Prince Edward Island experienced the largest occupancy drop, decreasing 18.0 percent to 71.6 percent. Alberta (-12.6 percent to 67.9 percent) and Ontario (-10.3 percent to 61.6 percent) also reported double-digit occupancy decreases.

    • Four provinces reported ADR increases: Saskatchewan (+7.6 percent to CAD$115.10); Manitoba (+4.9 percent to CAD$106.70); Nova Scotia (+2.3 percent to CAD$129.19); and New Brunswick (+1.5 percent to CAD$122.24).

    • Alberta experienced the largest ADR decrease, down 17.1 percent to CAD$155.23

    • Saskatchewan reported the only double-digit RevPAR increase, jumping 10.2 percent to CAD$87.98.

    • Four provinces ended the week with double-digit RevPAR decreases: Alberta (-27.7 percent to CAD$105.35); British Columbia (-20.6 percent to CAD$96.30); Prince Edward Island (-18.7 percent to CAD$92.48); and Ontario (-16.0 percent to CAD$71.91).
