STR reports Canada performance for week ending 29 August 2009

  • Smith Travel Research The Canadian hotel industry posted decreases in all three key performance measurements during the week of 23-29 August, according to data from STR.

    In year-over-year measurements, the industry's occupancy fell 6.4 percent to end the week at 70.1 percent. Average daily rate dropped 5.7 percent to finish the week at CAD$126.08. Revenue per available room for the week decreased 11.9 percent to finish at CAD$88.34.

    Among the provinces, Prince Edward Island reported the largest increases in all three key metrics. Occupancy rose 13.4 percent to 79.6 percent; ADR was up 19.7 percent to CAD$152.32; and RevPAR jumped 35.8 percent to CAD$121.30.

    Of the remaining provinces, Newfoundland was the only one to report an occupancy increase, up 3.2 percent to 90.4 percent. Alberta posted the largest occupancy decrease, falling 11.5 percent to 67.1 percent, followed by Ontario (-8.4 percent to 66.5 percent) and Manitoba (-7.5 percent to 66.5 percent).

    Newfoundland reported an ADR increase of 8.2 percent to CAD$145.64, followed by Saskatchewan with an 8.1-percent increase to CAD117.48. Nova Scotia reported the largest ADR decrease, down 9.7 percent to CAD$120.80. Alberta also posted a large decline of 8.1 percent to CAD$138.70.

    Other than Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland was the only province to experience a double-digit RevPAR increase, jumping 11.6 percent to CAD$131.60. Four provinces reported double-digit RevPAR decreases: Alberta (-18.6 percent to CAD$93.09)Ontario (-14.3 percent to CAD$76.84); Nova Scotia (-12.6 percent to CAD$94.35); and British Columbia (-10.9 percent to CAD$106.54).
