STR reports Canada performance for week ending 5 September 2009

  • Smith Travel Research The Canadian hotel industry posted mixed results in the three key performance measurements during the week of 30 August-5 September, according to data from STR.

    In year-over-year measurements, the industry's occupancy increased 6.1 percent to end the week at 66.0 percent. Average daily rate dropped 8.4 percent to finish the week at CAD$125.75. Revenue per available room for the week decreased 2.8 percent to finish at CAD$82.97.

    Among the provinces, Newfoundland experienced the largest occupancy increase, up 22.3 percent to 76.9 percent. Three other provinces reported double-digit occupancy increases: New Brunswick (+21.5 percent to 64.5 percent); Prince Edward Island (+15.6 percent to 59.9 percent); and Nova Scotia (+13.0 percent to 70.5 percent). Alberta was the only province to report a slight occupancy decrease, down 0.3 percent to 66.9 percent.

    Saskatchewan reported the largest ADR increase, up 5.6 percent to CAD$115.55, followed by Newfoundland (+2.9 percent to CAD$125.00) and New Brunswick (+1.0 percent to CAD$113.37). Ontario posted the largest ADR decrease, falling 12.3 percent to CAD$116.65. Four other provinces reported ADR decreases of more than 5 percent: Nova Scotia (-8.5 percent to CAD$118.17); Alberta (-7.5 percent to CAD$142.16); British Columbia (-6.0 percent to CAD$140.50); and Quebec (-5.8 percent to CAD$130.65).

    Newfoundland posted the largest RevPAR increase, jumping 25.8 percent to CAD$96.10. New Brunswick (+22.7 percent to CAD$73.17) and Prince Edward Island (+16.3 percent to CAD$74.00) also reported RevPAR increases of more than 15 percent. Two provinces experienced RevPAR decreases: Alberta (-7.8 percent to CAD$95.11) and Ontario (-7.3 percent to CAD$74.52).
