MCLEAN, VA (Dec. 10, 2002) – The Hospitality Sales & Marketing Association International (HSMAI) is celebrating its 75th Anniversary with a gala dinner honoring the association leaders of the past and present to be held on Thursday, April 3, 2003 in Chicago, the site of the organization’s first conference held in 1927.
“Seventy-five years of history deserves to be recognized with a special gala event,” said Robert A. Gilbert, CHME, CHA, president and CEO of HSMAI.
“The history of the HSMAI organization and the individual tourism, travel and hospitality industries that make up HSMAI is rich in achievements and glory that have lead us to the powerful travel and tourism industry we have today,” Gilbert added.
In keeping with HSMAI’s anniversary, a distinguished group of industry executives are involved in what has been a three-year labor of love in creating a commemorative book on the 75 years of history of the sales and marketing profession and HSMAI. Three years ago, Neil W. Ostergren, CHME, past president of HSMAI, and David Dorf, CHME, retired director of Education and Training of HSMAI, agreed to co-author this commemorative book.
The gala dinner and the commemorative book are sponsored by the HSMAI Foundation, which makes contributions to the book and dinner sponsorships a tax-deductible expense (including a portion of the dinner price).
Ilsa Whittemore, editor-in-chief of the HSMAI Marketing Review, will be editing and designing the book for release at the gala dinner event in April 2003.
Michael A. Leven, CHME, president and CEO of U.S. Franchise Systems, and John Russell, CHME, partner of Yesawich, Pepperdine, Brown & Russell and CEO of Hospitality Artists, LLC, also both former presidents of HSMAI, have agreed to co-chair a fundraising effort to raise the money needed for production and printing of the book.
The gala dinner will be held in conjunction with several other HSMAI events taking place in Chicago next April including:
a) HSMAI Affordable Meetings Mid-America
b) HSMAI Americas Region Board meeting
c) HSMAI Annual Chapter Leadership Forum
Past presidents and other industry leaders of the past are being invited to attend along with the current HSMAI leadership and many of the hospitality industry participants in the HSMAI Affordable Meetings Mid-America show, which numbered more than 800 delegates last spring. Invited attendees will include:
o Past presidents and chairman of HSMAI
o Past chairman of the HSMAI Foundation
o Past HSMAI Hall of Fame inductees
o Past Winthrop W. Grice and Albert E. Koehl award recipients
o Past and present sponsors and partners
o Key industry executives from Europe
o Current HSMAI Chapter leadership
o Key industry association executives from AH&LA, IACVB, MPI, PCMA, ASAE, TIA and other travel and hospitality organizations
o Membership at large
o Members of the media
“The vast majority of our history is entrenched in only the hotel industry, but today less than 50% of our membership is employed in the hotel industry,” noted Gilbert. “Membership in 2002 includes nearly 7,000 individuals and 60 chapters mostly in the United States and Europe,” he added.
