WASHINGTON, D.C., December 12, 2002 -- National Trust Historic Hotels of America announces the selection of the Hyatt Regency St. Louis at Union Station as the site for its 2003 annual meeting. Approximately 200 people representing historic hotels, resorts and inns throughout the country will attend the meeting October 22-25, 2003.
We are delighted to hold our annual meeting at the Hyatt Regency St. Louis at Union Station, said Thierry Roch, executive director of Historic Hotels of America. St. Louis is a great American city - rich in history, architecture and culture.
Joe Hindsley, general manager of the Hyatt Regency St. Louis at Union Station, enthusiastically invited his peers to attend the meeting. We will show this association of world-class hoteliers the 'spirit of St. Louis;' one of this nation's finest restoration projects and the warm hospitality of the Midwest.
During its heyday, St. Louis Union Station was undisputedly the world's largest and busiest railroad terminal. Built in 1894, it boasts a soaring six-story barrel-vaulted lobby with stained glass accents. The exquisite plaster detailing and bas-reliefs, frescoes and expansive marble floors are just a sample of the architectural treasures in this remarkably restored Romanesque-style National Historic Landmark. The $150 million restoration of Union Station in the early 1980s was the largest federal investment tax-credit project ever undertaken in the U.S. With the combination of dining, shopping and the hotel, Union Station is one of the top tourist destinations in St. Louis.
Founded in 1989 to promote heritage tourism, National Trust Historic Hotels of America is an exclusive program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. National Trust Historic Hotels of America has identified 191 quality hotels that have faithfully maintained their historic integrity, architecture and ambiance. To be selected for this program, a hotel must be at least 50 years old, listed or eligible for the National Register of Historic Places or recognized locally as having historic significance.
