Friday, 20 December, 2002.- The emblematic Gran Meliá Victoria Hotel on the seafront Paseo Marítimo, in Palma Bay, Majorca, Spain has become the seventh Sol Meliá hotel to achieve ISO 9001 Quality Certification. At the same time, the Gran Meliá Victoria has also been granted ISO 14001 certification for the implementation of its Environmental Management System.
The superior quality of its services and the active involvement of its personnel and management, together with the essential cooperation of guests and suppliers have allowed the Gran Meliá Victoria to successfully complete an arduous auditing process to obtain both certifications. The excellence of its facilities and the highest standards of quality and personalized service are the most outstanding characteristics of a hotel which has attained the highest category possible within the Spanish hotel company: Gran Meliá, a name reserved for the most exclusive and select 5 star deluxe hotels in the company’s hotel portfolio, located in the center of some of the world’s major cities and first class resort destinations.
Awards for clear environmental protection policies:
Environmental Management Systems are a new style of management systems allowing significant improvements in results and in environmental protection at the same time. They also tend to improve a hotel’s image before its guests, suppliers and public and private bodies while also increasing competitiveness thanks to a more rational use of resources (energy, water, dangerous substances ...), to the reduction of waste and its selective collection.
In line with its policy of environmental protection, in 1995 Sol Meliá created its own Environmental Protection Manual containing measures which have gradually been implemented in company hotels. Thanks to the measures taken, many company hotels have already received awards and certifications for their contribution to environmental protection.
There are now 7 Sol Meliá that have achieved ISO 14001 certification: the Meliá Confort (future TRYP) Montevideo (Montevideo, Uruguay), the Sol Magalluf Park (Majorca, Spain), the Sol Milanos-Pingüinos (Menorca, Spain), the Sol Pelícanos-Ocas (Benidorm, Spain), the Sol Falcó (Menorca, Spain), the Gran Meliá Don Pepe (Malaga, Spain) and the Gran Meliá Victoria (Palma de Majorca, Spain)
There are also 9 Sol Meliá hotels that have achieved the prestigious EMAS certification: Sol Cala d´Or (Majorca, Spain), Sol Gavilanes (Minorca, Spain), Sol Pinet Playa (Ibiza, Spain), Sol Falcó (Minorca, Spain), Meliá Barcelona (Barcelona, Spain), Meliá Girona (Girona, Spain), Meliá Sitges (Sitges, Spain), Tryp Apolo (Barcelona, Spain) and the Gran Meliá Don Pepe (Malaga, Spain).
Commitment to quality tourism and reduced seasonality in the Balearic Islands:
To further improve its facilities, the Gran Meliá Victoria has recently begun work on the construction of what will be come a grand Convention Center. Involving an investment of 6 million Euros and with a total of 10 meeting halls for events for up to 500 guests, this new and modern facility for business travelers is expected to open at the end of 2003.
The plans form part of a Sol Meliá strategy to diversify its facilities in the Balearic Islands and reduce seasonality in their business, while also further demonstrating the company’s commitment to superior quality tourism in the islands.
