Delta Hotels opens idyllic resort in the B.C. Rockies |
|
Former school for aboriginal children takes on new life |
TORONTO, Jan. 14 /CNW/ - Steeped in fascinating history, the new Delta
St. Eugene Mission Resort is now welcoming guests. Set on the banks of the St.
Mary River, it is just ten miles north of Cranbrook in southeastern British
Columbia.
A residential school for aboriginal children from 1910 to 1970, the main
mission building is a remarkable transformation of heritage architecture into
a modern full-service, four-season destination resort, complete with high-
speed Internet access, dining and conference facilities.
"We are extremely proud of our partnership with Chief Sophie Pierre and
the Ktunaxa Kinbasket Tribal Council, owners of this exceptional property,"
said John Pye, President, Delta Hotels. "While it enhances our strong resort
portfolio, Canadians and visitors to our country will be richly rewarded by
the memorable experience that awaits them. It is an opportunity to learn about
First Nation traditions and our national heritage."
Delta St. Eugene Mission Resort joins a well-established and growing
collection of Delta resort locations in Western Canada, including Victoria,
Whistler, Kananaskis and Sun Peaks.
Set amid 327 acres of gently rolling landscape, Delta's newest resort
property features 125 guest rooms and suites, 4,600 square feet of meeting and
conference space, the championship St. Eugene Mission Golf Resort, the
12,000-square-foot Casino of the Rockies -- and a bat roost!
The new Kootenay lodge holds 100 rooms and suites, while 25 well-
appointed guest rooms can be found in the three-storey mission building.
Featuring vaulted ceilings, exposed wooden beams and cathedral-style windows,
rooms in the main building all have slightly different layouts. Some feature
the original exposed fired-clay brick walls, and others offer gas fireplaces.
The resort's meeting space is also located in the main mission building. Six
naturally lit rooms with coffered ceilings, including the Chief David Room,
the mission's former chapel, are fully equipped with audiovisual equipment and
high-speed Internet access.
During the winter season, Delta guests are only 20 minutes away from the
incredible ski runs in the charming mountain towns of Kimberley and Fernie.
Home to the 2003 FIS World freestyle event, Fernie was voted "Best Skiers'
Town" this year by Ski Canada and regularly places in the "Top 10" for powder
quality and quantity. Kimberley is home to North America's longest illuminated
run, the Main Run.
For an outstanding golf experience, Delta guests have the St. Eugene
Mission Golf Resort at their doorstep. The Delta-managed 7007-yard par 72
course has quickly established itself as a "must" for serious golfers. Golf
Digest ranked it third-best new Canadian course when it debuted in 2000. A Les
Furber design, the 18-hole PGA-standard championship course moves through open
links and pine forest. Other amenities include a practice facility, a full-
service pro shop, and the 19th Hole Bar & Grill in the clubhouse -- one of the
resort's original landmark buildings -- with awesome views of the fairways and
the snow-capped Rocky Mountains.
From mountain biking and horseback riding to bird watching and fly
fishing, guests of Delta St. Eugene Mission Resort can choose from an
incredible range of outdoor experiences. The St. Mary River, for example, is
widely regarded as one of the finest spots in North America for fly fishing.
Considered a "classic" free stone stream, it is fishable from mid-June to
October.
Guests seeking indoor entertainment will enjoy the Casino of the Rockies.
Operated by Lake City Casinos for the British Columbia Lottery Corporation,
the casino features 225 slot machines and 15 gaming tables.
In Spring 2003, a new recreation and fitness complex will open, complete
with an outdoor heated pool, hot tub, sauna and steam rooms, as will the
Ktunaxa Kinbasket Interpretive Centre and a 24-unit teepee camp.
Renovations at this unique property have been sensitive to both its
history and its ecology: Delta Hotels and the KKTC owners responded to one
challenge in a state-of-the-art fashion. Long-eared Townsend bats had
established a colony in the once-abandoned mission building. Increasingly
rare, these creatures, which are known to travel up to ten miles during a
single evening, have been given a climate- and sound-controlled refuge in the
attic and belfry. An infrared camera is in place so that local wildlife
researchers can monitor their activities, while Delta guests can watch via
closed-circuit television!
