STR Reports Canada Performance for Week Ending 5 March 2011

    The Canadian hotel industry reported mixed results in the three key performance metrics for the week of 27 February-5 March 2011, according to data from STR.

    In year-over-year measurements, the Canadian hotel industry’s occupancy ended the week flat at 55.3 percent. Average daily rate dropped 2.6 percent to CAD$123.22. Revenue per available room fell 2.4 percent to CAD$68.16.

    Among the provinces, Newfoundland rose 12.3 percent in occupancy to 58.3 percent, reporting the largest increase in that metric. Ontario followed with a 7.2-percent occupancy increase to 58.4 percent. New Brunswick (-18.5 percent to 43.7 percent) and Prince Edward Island (-14.9 percent to 34.2 percent) reported the largest occupancy decreases for the week.

    Newfoundland posted the largest ADR increase, rising 5.1 percent to CAD$120.39, followed by Manitoba (+4.4 percent to CAD$110.57) and Ontario (+4.4 percent to CAD$124.40). British Columbia fell 22.3 percent in ADR to CAD$122.79, reporting the largest decrease in that metric.

    Two provinces experienced double-digit RevPAR increases: Newfoundland (+18.0 percent to CAD$70.20) and Ontario (+11.8 percent to CAD$72.62). British Columbia reported the largest RevPAR decrease, falling 28.9 percent to CAD$66.38, followed by Prince Edward Island (-23.2 percent to CAD$25.83) and New Brunswick (-19.7 percent to CAD$47.38).
