  • Hotwire Exchange Rates Work in Tourists' Favour as Cities on the US Border Continue To Be Hot Markets

Hotwire.com  announced the results of the October 2011 Hotwire® Canadian Hotel Rate Report, which features the top five cities in Canada where hotel rates have dropped the most. This month, the exchange rate continues to affect prices throughout the country, prompting many cities to offer fantastic deals. When combined with Hotwire's already discounted prices, the Hotel Rate Report helps guide customers to the destinations that can maximize their travel dollars.

After being a consistent presence on the list over the past year, Banff, Alberta finally claims the number one spot with a 12 percent price decrease. Banff is one of Canada's most popular tourist destinations year-round, and since the peak snow season hasn't yet started, hotels are keeping prices low to keep rooms filled.

Kingston, Ontario stays steady at the number two spot with a 10 percent decrease this month. Offering easy access to the popular Thousand Islands part of Canada, Kingston is coming out of their summer peak season and has started to experience some softness in hotel bookings, so travellers can expect low prices for a few months.

Along with Kingston, Montreal and Victoria are seeing price drops due to their close proximity to the United States border, with an eight and seven percent decrease, respectively. As the high value of the Canadian dollar continues to affect international tourist traffic, many Canadian cities near the border are still offering favourable rates as a cheaper alternative to other US destinations.

Rounding out the top five is Calgary, which jumps back on the list with a six percent decrease as they enter into their shoulder season. Traveller traffic to this region is expected to be soft this season and throughout the upcoming winter months, meaning better deals for tourists.

When compared to the same time last year, the top five hotel price reductions for October 2011 include:

Price Example of a Current Hotwire
Rank Hotel Market Drop Deal, CAD$/Night
    1 Banff, AB -12% 3-star $110
    2 Kingston, ON -10% 3-star $131
    3 Montreal, QC -8% 4-star $130
    4 Victoria, BC -7% 4-star $119
    5 Calgary, AB -6% 4-star $118

"The majority of Canada's biggest cities are beginning their transition into shoulder season, which means that rates will start to lower until the winter sports season officially kicks off," said Clem Bason, president of the Hotwire Group. "Exchange rates also continue to play a part in the dropping prices as cities along the Canadian border are offering better rates to entice travellers from nearby US cities. These factors make these destinations a slam dunk for those looking for a break in advance of the holidays."

Hotwire is able to find great deals because it works with hotels, airlines and car rental companies to fill unsold inventory. This means customers can find incredibly low deals on Hotwire, especially in cities like those on the Hotel Rate Report where prices are unseasonably low.
