    The Caribbean/Mexico hotel development pipeline comprises 126 hotels totaling 20,436 rooms, according to the January 2013 STR Construction Pipeline Report. The total active pipeline includes projects in the In Construction, Final Planning and Planning stages but does not include projects in the Pre-Planning stage.

    Among the Chain Scale segments, the Luxury segment accounted for the largest number of rooms in the region’s total active pipeline, with 33.9 percent and 6,933 rooms. Three other segments each made up more than 10 percent of rooms in the total active pipeline: the Upscale segment (19.4 percent with 3,958 rooms); the Unaffiliated segment (17.9 percent with 3,658 rooms); and the Upper Midscale segment (15.9 percent with 3,259 rooms).

    The Luxury segment (41.7 percent with 4,109 rooms) and the Unaffiliated segment (19.9 percent with 1,967 rooms) each made up the largest number of rooms under construction in the region.
