  • AH&LA LANSING, Mich., August 2003-Just as a motorist doesn't need to be an auto mechanic to drive a car, a hotel manager doesn't need to be an information technology expert to operate the technological systems at a lodging property.

However, a manager who has some basic knowledge about the essential operations of systems will be better equipped to use technology as an effective tool in managing information needs. The fourth edition of "Managing Technology in the Hospitality Industry," written by Michael L. Kasavana and John J. Cahill provides managers and students with the background they need to use hospitality technology with confidence.
New topics in this edition of the textbook include e-commerce, Internet distribution systems, wireless point-of-sale technology, guest relationship management, and data warehousing. A new chapter on systems and security maintenance covers threats and precautions, data backups, security audits, and manual operations plans. It defines management and staff roles during times when property systems are down for a significant length of time, and includes an appendix on working a manual front desk operation.
The book covers an extensive array of hospitality technology systems, including reservation systems, rooms management and guest accounting applications, property management systems, food and beverage and sales and catering applications, accounting applications, and information management systems.
Members of the American Hotel & Lodging Association's Technology Committee and E-Business Committee and the CHTP Advisory Council of Hospitality Financial and Technology Professionals contributed to the development of this textbook.
"Managing Technology in the Hospitality Industry" is available to hospitality professionals for $56.95, or $45.95 for AH&LA members. Call 800-752-4567 or 517-372-8800 to place an order.
