The Baird/STR Hotel Stock Index reported a 2.1-percent increase to 3,049 in November. Year-to-date 2013, the Baird/STR Hotel Stock Index is up 24.6 percent. The index ended 2012 at 2,448.
Robert W. Baird and Co. and STR partnered to create the Baird/STR Hotel Stock Index, the first widely available U.S. hotel stock index in the hotel industry. The index combines Baird’s financial markets expertise, the data processing of STR and the up-to-the-minute distribution capabilities of Hotel News Now, the industry’s leading hotel news website.
The Baird/STR Hotel Stock Index outperformed the MSCI REIT (RMZ) (-5.5 percent) for the month of November.
“It’s been a fascinating run in terms of industry performance over the past three years, and the hotel stocks have been a big beneficiary of that growth,” said Randy Smith, co-founder and chairman of STR. “The dramatic rise in value of the Hotel Stock Index is in stride with the record demand the industry has experienced, which suggests that investors look at lodging as a great investment.”
“Hotel stocks outperformed other real estate sectors for the fifth consecutive month as investors remain focused on growth,” said David Loeb, senior hotel research analyst and managing director at Baird. “Investors and management teams see at least two to three more years of strong growth in this up cycle, which is helping support stocks’ valuations and keeping them in favor with both real estate and non-real estate investors.”
