Canadian Hotel Construction Pipeline Up 3.1% For December 2013

Canada’s total active hotel development pipeline comprises 199 projects totalling 23,142 rooms, according to the December 2013 STR Pipeline Report.

Smith Travel Research Canada’s total active hotel development pipeline comprises 199 projects totalling 23,142 rooms, according to the December 2013 STR Pipeline Report. This represents a 3.1-percent increase in the number of rooms in the total active pipeline compared with December 2012 and a 12.7-percent increase in rooms under construction. The total active pipeline data includes projects in the In Construction, Final Planning and Planning stages but does not include projects in the Pre-Planning stage.

Among the provinces, Alberta reported the largest number of rooms under construction (2,267 rooms), followed by Ontario (2,202 rooms) and Saskatchewan (1,074 rooms).

According to the December report, 51 projects totalling 6,448 rooms are slated to open in 2014, representing an increase in room supply of 1.5 percent. The majority of these rooms are in the Upscale (2,956 rooms) and Upper Midscale (2,579 rooms) Chain Scale segments.
