  • AH&LA Washington, Oct. 1, 2003 – La Quinta Inns, Inc.’s former founder and retired Chairman and President/CEO Sam Barshop will be honored at the third installment of the Americas Lodging Investment Summit (ALIS), Jan. 19–21, 2004, at The Century Plaza Hotel & Spa and the St. Regis – Los Angeles.

The prestigious ALIS Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to Barshop in recognition of his commendable accomplishments in the lodging industry as well as the honorable deeds he has performed in several communities throughout his lifetime.

Considered a major contributor to the lodging industry, Barshop opened the first La Quinta hotel in 1968, next door to the San Antonio World’s Fair. Since then, he has grown the mid-price hotel company to more than 330 properties in 33 states — becoming one of the hospitality industry’s most recognized brands. Since his retirement in September 1995, he formed Barshop and Oles, L.P., a personal investment and commercial development real estate company based in the San Antonio and Austin, Texas areas. Active in local, state, and national affairs, Barshop currently serves as a member on numerous boards and committees including the University of Texas and University of the Incarnate Word as well as act as chair for the Entrepreneurship Studies program at the Texas State University.

“We are delighted that Sam will be at ALIS to accept this coveted award because he truly deserves this overdue recognition. An entrepreneur, a pioneer, and visionary who built a great lodging company — he also has shown incredible leadership with his many philanthropic pursuits,” said BHN President and Conference Chairman Jim Burba.

Co-hosted by the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AH&LA) and the Burba Hotel Network (BHN), the two and a half day event is designed to address the unique needs of the hospitality investment community and provide a meeting and networking place for hotel executives, investors, lenders, developers, and professional financial advisors. ALIS features an extensive array of seminars hosted by leading experts and investors discussing important trends and identifying new opportunities.

Proceeds from ALIS will benefit the educational, research, and training missions of the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Foundation, AH&LA’s not-for-profit affiliate.

In addition, the Transaction of the Year 2003 awards will be presented at ALIS. This honor is given to hotel companies with outstanding business deals for the previous year in three categories — merger and acquisition, single asset, and new development. The finalists will be announced in late December.
