Until recently, a contemporary aesthetic was primarily the domain of boutique hoteliers like Ian Schrager, who hired Philippe Starck to create the whimsical, often minuscule rooms and the see-and-be-seen-in public spaces that made his hotels fashionable hangouts for the under-40 set.
