Americans Love Affair With Beach Travel
WASHINGTON, DC --
Beach travelers take longer vacations, spend more money on their trips
and are more likely to rent a condo or timeshare than the average
traveler, according to data from the Travel Industry Association of
America’s (TIA) new
Domestic Travel Market Report, 2002 Edition. Going to the
beach is a family affair as well, with nearly four in ten (37%) U.S.
households visiting the beach and taking a child on the trip. Just 23
percent of overall traveling households include a child when
traveling.
Nearly 110 million person-trips were made by U.S. households to the
beach last year, up seven percent from the year before. A person-trip
is one person traveling 50+ miles, one-way, away from home. Households
visiting the beach spend an average of $850 per trip, excluding
transportation to their destination, compared to just $463 for overall
traveling households.
More than one-third (35%) of beach trips last seven nights or more. On
average, overnight beach trips last an average of 5.9 nights, compared
to 4.1 nights for overall travel. Beach travelers are more likely than
overall traveling households to stay in a condo or timeshare (16% vs.
4%) or in an RV or tent (8% vs. 5%).
Beach trips are less likely than the average trip to be taken by the
travelers own car or truck (72% vs. 69%). Correspondingly, beach trips
are more likely than average to include air transportation (21% vs.
17%) and a rental car as a secondary mode of transportation (9% vs.
6%).
Beach travelers do more than just work on their tans and swim in the
ocean. They love to go shopping (46% of person-trips), participate in
a variety of outdoor activities (29%), visit historical places or
museums (23%), go to national or state parks (20%), and visit theme or
amusement parks (17%). |
