Hilton’s (NYSE:HLT) lifestyle brand, Canopy by Hilton, and hotel developer Fathom Companies have broken ground to start construction of the 135-room, six-story Canopy by Hilton Portland Waterfront, slated to open spring 2021. Located on the corner of Center and Commercial Streets in Portland, Maine’s Old Port neighborhood, the hotel will also be home to an indoor/outdoor rooftop bar and a restaurant overlooking Casco Bay.

“Today’s groundbreaking is an exciting milestone for Canopy by Hilton, as it brings us closer to opening our doors in the eclectic and dynamic city of Portland, Maine,” said Gary Steffen, global head, Canopy by Hilton. “Canopy by Hilton Portland Waterfront will enable locals and travelers alike to experience the city’s rich history, creative culinary scene and beautiful nature sites.”

Fathom Companies is developing and will manage the property. Fathom received unanimous approval from the Historic Preservation Board and Planning Board earlier this year and expects to open the hotel in spring 2021. Fathom Companies selected Cianbro Corporation as the construction manager, Baskervill for architecture and Ealain Studio for interior design.

“It’s an exciting time for positive and responsible growth in Portland, Maine. We have deep roots in this city and are building this hotel with a keen eye for design and functionality with thoughtful and surprising amenities. We know we can deliver a fresh approach to hospitality from Canopy that is true and genuine to the Portland community,” said Jim Brady, president of Fathom Companies. “Come spring 2021, we look forward to delivering travelers a distinctly Portland, Maine experience.”
