Jurys Doyle hotels optimisitc despite profit drop

Jurys Doyle (JDH.I) posted lower first-half pretax profit on Tuesday as the head of Ireland's largest hotel operator said the home market remained difficult but that he was inclined to be optimistic overall.

Jurys Doyle "The continued recovery in the UK and the U.S. mean we would be more on the optimistic side than the cautious side now," Jurys Doyle Chief Executive Pat McCann said in an interview when asked about his "cautiously optimistic" outlook for this year.

On the prospects for the company's Irish business, however, McCann told Reuters: "There are some slight signs of improvement but I would be reluctant to say that we have turned the corner."

Business at its five-star hotels in Ireland had received a boost from the country's 6-month stint holding the presidency of the European Union, he added, while a lack of conference business continued to plague the four-star hotels.
