The Laboratory is part of the Southern Wine & Spirits Beverage Management Center located on FIU's Biscayne Bay Campus.
As one of the founders of Southern Wine & Spirits, Jay Weiss was instrumental in the establishment, in 1999, of the Southern Wine & Spirits Beverage Management Center. The center provides students, industry professionals and others, the opportunity to learn about beverage management in state-of-the-art facilities. The Jay W. Weiss Wine and Spirits Laboratory is the premier facility in the Center, the ideal place to analyze, test, and experience fine wines, spirits and beers.
The multi-tiered room accommodates 41 participants at individual stations equipped with plumbed sinks. The room is acoustically balanced and has an independent air-handling system to eliminate sensory interference and to promote concentration among wine and spirits tasters. Incandescent lighting provides the ideal setting for the objective viewing of wines and spirits and makes color-masking tests possible.
The dedication ceremony was followed by a luncheon on the terrace of the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, where friends and family celebrated the life of a great visionary, Jay W. Weiss.
