FIU Students to Benefit from Caribbean Carnival Party

Florida International University's School of Hospitality and Tourism Management celebrated its rich diversity with the 5th Annual University Fete, a carnival-style party that highlights Caribbean culture and raises scholarship funds for international students.

Florida International University The Fete was hosted by FIU and the House of Angostura from Trinidad & Tobago on Saturday, October 8th on the FIU Biscayne Bay Campus' Hospitality Management bayside patio, Northeast 151st Street and Biscayne Blvd. Proceeds from the event will benefit scholarships for international students at the FIU School of Hospitality and Tourism Management. During the past four years, organizers have raised more than $50,000 in scholarships that have helped more than 100 international hospitality students.

'Once again, we are working with our friends from Angostura in Trinidad & Tobago to provide residents from Miami-Dade and Broward with a premier social and cultural event during Carnival Weekend,' said Joseph West, Dean of FIU's School of Hospitality Management. 'Bringing students and professionals together from around the world enriches the experience for everyone involved and helps raise awareness of the diverse resources, products and services that help promote destination driven tourism.'

The carnival-style party is open to the public and it drew about 3,500 people. Premium beverages and specialty drinks as well as fine Caribbean and international cuisine were provided by Angostura, Ltd, an international distributor recognized for its premium quality rums, mixes and its famous aromatic bitters.

Some of this year's performers included: Byron Lee and the Dragonaires, David Rudder, Bunji Garlin, Adesh Samaroo, Roger George, Schurwin Winchester, Rikki Jai, Eddy Charles and Leon Coldero.
