Changes, They are a Comin'! Job Market Loosens Up - By Alan E. Young, Partner, Apical Resource Group

Well, it is really starting to happen. We are seeing signs of life creep back in the hotel and travel jobs market. I must admit that I did not expect to see any real signs of life until the 1st quarter of 2010 but here we are in December and the numbers are looking pretty good. If the increase of clients at our company is an indicator, we should expect to see a dramatic rise in available jobs in the 1st quarter next year.

Apical Resource Group This is not to say that we are seeing record levels of employment by any means but the fact that there are more job notices on hotel and travel supplier web sites is a very good indicator that we are on the up-swing. Even the companies that supply the hotel and travel industry with technology, etc are announcing requirements for people at a faster pace.

Now, we still have a long way to go. There were over 400,000 travel and hospitality jobs lost between 2008 and 2009. A large number of these positions we scattered between the hotel and airline sector and the markets that they have an impact upon. The traveling public, both transient and business, still has got to believe fully in the fact that the economy is going to rebound in 2010 in order for the jobs market to really pick up but I would suggest that we are now starting to see that.

Another indicator that helps us to see that the market will bounce back from the jobs perspective in 2010 is the fact that companies are investing in technology once again. Not only have hotel and travel companies budgeted for technology initiatives in 2010 but the venture capital community is also looking to start investing in firms with solid and innovative travel/hotel technology platforms.

From a personal perspective, if you are one of the unlucky ones still looking for full-time employment, keep your chin up, things are getting better. Start looking at the company's careers sections to see if there are positions out there that are a fit for you or that you can squeeze into if required. Also, keep on leveraging your personal networks as much as possible. Friends in this day and age tend to come in pretty handy.

One final note, we as a travel and hospitality community, must keep an eye out for each other as these jobs begin to resurface. The great thing about our industry is that it is truly a community and a very close one at that so communication is key in order to ensure that the people who have been placed on the unemployment line have a fighting chance of getting back in the game.

The times they are a changin'...for the better!
