STR’s SHARE Center crowned a team from Niagara University as the winner of its inaugural market study competition at HX: The Hotel Experience conference earlier this month in New York City.
The competition featured 27 teams representing the leading hospitality schools from throughout the nation. Each team selected a major metropolitan market to research and analyze in the months leading up to the conference. The teams then presented their findings and recommendations to judges during the HX conference at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center.
Niagara’s winning team of Carl Bailey, Fabian Lehmann, Jenna Roberts and Adam Zarczynski presented on the Greater Buffalo hotel market. Team Niagara’s research and presentation was supervised by Dr. William D. Frye and Dr. Chang Huh, faculty members from the university’s College of Hospitality and Tourism Management.
“Our team enthusiastically embarked on the challenge to compete and win this competition back in early September,” Frye said. “This competition provided our college the opportunity to test the efficacy of our structured hotel analytics program. Our college’s Advanced Hotel Operations course culminates with Niagara students sitting for the STR Certification in Hotel Industry Analytics (CHIA) exam, and Niagara University’s first-place finish in this competition, as well as our high rate of student certification, validates both the success of the CHIA program and its usefulness in making students more marketable and prepared for success in the lodging industry. The College of Hospitality and Tourism Management at Niagara University recognizes the value and importance of the CHIA program, as supported by the STR Share Center, and looks forward to next year’s competition.”
In addition to Niagara’s winning quartet, finalists in the competition included teams from DePaul University, San Diego State University, the University of New Orleans, the University of San Francisco, Texas Tech University and San Francisco State University.
“All of the students really worked hard and did a great job,” said Steve Hood, STR’s senior VP for research and founding director of the SHARE Center. “The industry professionals who kindly helped us judge the competition were very impressed and asked for sample presentations.”
